Stardew Valley, a cherished indie game that has captivated players for over a decade, still has a significant gap concerning one of its most vital animal companions: the horse. Despite the introduction of a substantial update earlier this year, major enhancements for horses remain overlooked. Players are still unable to engage in meaningful activities such as petting their horses, upgrading their stables, or developing a friendship similar to that with other animals in the game.
In the picturesque town of Pelican Town, all interactable characters and animals possess a friendship meter, which allows players to cultivate relationships over time. However, horses stand out as the only animals without a method to form such bonds. This absence is particularly frustrating for players who rely on horses for their daily activities on the farm, as they are deprived of the joy of nurturing a friendship with these majestic creatures.
Horses Are The Only Animal Without Hearts
Not To Make Hay Over This
As of the recent patch 1.6, horses are unique in their neglect, as they are the only animals lacking a friendship bar. This means that when players check their daily interactions with animals, their horse’s section remains conspicuously empty. Unlike every other farm animal, which can be petted and cherished, the horse is left unattended in a stable, enduring the varied climates of summer and winter without any interaction.
While players can enhance their horse’s speed with treats, this does not cultivate any relational bonding. Given that a significant part of gameplay revolves around growing relationships—many of which yield recipes and gifts—it feels incongruous not to include this mechanic for horses. Players should have the opportunity to express affection for their horse, similar to daily interactions with dogs and cats.
Stardew Valley Needs Upgradable Stables
These Horses Need A Better Home
In contrast to the features available for other animals, which can be loved and taken care of daily, the stable for horses remains static and non-upgradable, limiting their living conditions. Currently costing 10,000g, five iron bars, and 100 hardwood to build, the stable’s size is convenient for placement yet severely limits the comfort of horses throughout varying weather conditions, leaving them exposed to rain, heat, and cold.
An upgrade system for stables, similar to that of other farm buildings, would provide a welcome addition to gameplay. This upgrade need not focus on adding more horses or providing overwhelming benefits but could simply enhance the quality of life for horses. Seasonal items, like blankets or heaters for winter, could add depth to the experience. Stardew Valley emphasizes the necessity of caring for animals, fostering relationships, and maintaining every aspect of farm life, yet it seems that the welfare of horses is an area that still requires attention and improvement.
