Grazer has voiced the difficulties of adapting Jack Bauer’s harrowing experiences for the cinema, recounting his struggles in an interview with Deadline back in 2017 while discussing the spin-off series 24: Legacy:

It naturally suited television better. We were unable to pinpoint the ideal setting, whether it should be in America or elsewhere. Although basing it in Europe was attempted, economic factors hindered its feasibility. Ultimately, we lacked the necessary budget and the right story.

If these have been the obstacles in the past, what has shifted now? Hollywood’s growing risk-averse nature still raises financial concerns, and as Grazer noted, 24’s format has historically been more suitable for the small screen. He shared that the project nearly moved forward several times in the past as well:

I got Howard (Gordon) involved, I got Kiefer involved, and devoted two years to crafting the movie.

Clearly, the 24 Movie is a labor of love for Brian Grazer, echoing a shared ambition with Kiefer Sutherland and the original showrunner, Howard Gordon. Various potential stories have circulated over the years, including outlandish ideas about crossovers with other franchises, which thankfully did not come to pass. In an earlier interview with Assignment X, Gordon acknowledged:
There was indeed a script at one point; however, it didn’t resonate strongly enough with the studio to justify moving forward.

We can only hope that the latest vision for the 24 Movie will materialize, transforming the beloved television series into a successful action film franchise.
