With Sebastian Stan recently clinching a Golden Globe, it has become even more apparent that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has not fully leveraged his remarkable talent over the past 14 years. Stan made his first appearance as Bucky Barnes in the 2011 film, Captain America: The First Avenger, and has since proven to be one of Marvel’s most consistent and skilled performers. Yet, unlike other A-list actors in the franchise, he has yet to receive a leading role that matches his talent.

Despite his transformation, the character still faces challenges in life and career, illustrating Stan’s range.
Additionally, Stan received a second nomination at the 2025 ceremony for his performance as Donald Trump in The Apprentice. Although he did not win in this category, the fact that he achieved two nominations and a win in a single year showcases his versatility and talent—an argument for why Marvel should capitalize on his abilities more effectively.

Sebastian Stan is poised to reprise his role as Bucky in the upcoming 2025 film, Thunderbolts, which gathers various anti-heroes and morally ambiguous characters in the MCU. While this ensemble film might not provide Bucky with a standalone narrative, it presents an opportunity for Stan and fellow actor Florence Pugh to step into larger roles compared to their prior appearances.
However, concerns arise among fans regarding the potential fate of Bucky in the film, fearing a tragic end. Such a decision could undermine years of character development. It is crucial that, should Bucky’s arc conclude within the MCU, he first receives a standalone project that allows Stan to explore the character fully.
The Potential for a Bucky Barnes Solo Project
The Necessity of a Solo Project for Bucky Barnes
Considering the significant journey Bucky Barnes has undertaken, it is essential for his story to culminate in a solo film or series. I’m open to either format, as long as it showcases his character development.
While I eagerly anticipate Bucky’s appearance in Thunderbolts, I am unsure if aligning with Val’s team offers the ideal conclusion to his arc in the larger narrative.
Ultimately, I advocate for a standalone project akin to Black Widow for Bucky Barnes, providing Sebastian Stan with the leading role he has long been deserving of. Regardless of how Bucky’s story ultimately concludes in future projects, it’s crucial he receives a standalone opportunity first, allowing exploration of either his present-day experiences or past history.
Thunderbolts is set to premiere on May 2nd, 2025, under the Marvel Studios banner.
