Wicked Achieves Significant Box Office Success
Wicked, directed by Jon M. Chu, has reached an impressive box office milestone in less than one month since its theatrical release. This film, based on the beloved 2003 musical, serves as a prequel to the Wizard of Oz, exploring the compelling backstory of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West (portrayed by Cynthia Erivo), alongside her friend and rival, Glinda (played by Ariana Grande-Butera).
A Strong Opening and Rapid Growth
The film debuted with an astounding $112.5 million at the domestic box office, rapidly climbing over $400 million globally. This remarkable performance has led Wicked to become the highest-grossing Broadway musical adaptation in history, surpassing the previous record held by Grease.
Projected Domestic Milestones
According to Deadline, Wicked is anticipated to exceed the $350 million mark at the domestic box office by the conclusion of its fourth weekend. Preliminary projections estimate a total of $358.8 million, although this figure may vary slightly as the weekend wraps up. Notably, Wicked is among a select group of four films released in 2024 to achieve this significant domestic milestone, trailing behind Despicable Me 4 ($361 million), Deadpool & Wolverine ($636.7 million), and Inside Out 2 ($652.9 million).
