Will There Be a Sequel to the Jujutsu Kaisen Manga?

Spoiler Warning: This article contains significant spoilers for the Jujutsu Kaisen manga.

The widely acclaimed Shonen manga, Jujutsu Kaisen, created by Gege Akutami, has concluded with Chapter 271. Following the release of the previous chapter, the entire JJK fandom was abuzz with excitement, leading many to speculate that an announcement regarding Jujutsu Kaisen Part 2 would accompany the final chapter. Thus, the burning question remains – Is a sequel to the Jujutsu Kaisen manga on the horizon? You’re not alone in pondering whether Gege Akutami will return with Part 2 of his sorcery epic, Jujutsu Kaisen.

Let us delve into the insights shared by author Gege Akutami in the finale of Jujutsu Kaisen concerning future plans.

As Gege Akutami started to wrap up various plot threads in the manga, it is hardly surprising that fans began to hope for a sequel. Moreover, the final panel of Chapter 270 suggested that Gege might be preparing to announce a new project, intensifying the fandom’s speculation regarding Jujutsu Kaisen Part 2.

However, it was later revealed that the announcement was actually to celebrate Jujutsu Kaisen’s milestone of 100 million copies in circulation.

While there’s always the potential for Gege to revisit the JJK universe with a sequel or prequel, it seems that the author currently has no immediate plans for Jujutsu Kaisen Part 2. If Gege had intended to unveil a sequel, he likely would have indicated this in the concluding panel of the final chapter, JJK Chapter 271. Instead, the editor’s note and Gege’s parting words – “I’ll keep doing my best in my future works” – suggest otherwise. It appears Gege may be focused on developing a new manga project.

Could a Jujutsu Kaisen Sequel or Prequel Occur?

Every dedicated fan knows that Gege has left numerous mysteries and story arcs unresolved within the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, fueling the desire for a sequel. The narrative was beautifully wrapped up, with references back to the first chapter and showing Sukuna’s last remaining finger tucked away in a wooden box.

However, things are different now, as the finger is no longer perceived as a threat. It has been repurposed as a talisman for curse protection, which was its intended purpose from the outset. While fans are hopeful for more content in the future, it is essential to note that the likelihood of a sequel happening is slim.

In my view, Sukuna’s succinct conversation with Mahito, coupled with the final panel, signifies a closure to the story, illustrating the King of Curses coming to terms with his circumstances. Yuji also received the resolution he sought, fulfilling the dream his Gojo sensei envisioned (for more on Gojo’s fate, check if he was revived in JJK’s final chapter), where he would succeed him. As Yuji’s grandfather envisioned in the first chapter, Yuji will continue to aid others, regardless of the circumstances. All these elements cohesively conclude Gege’s dark fantasy saga.

Therefore, I believe Gege Akutami’s journey with Jujutsu Kaisen has come to an end, allowing him to shift his focus toward new projects. Current speculation suggests that Gege could be developing a new idol manga. Interestingly, Gege had originally aimed to pivot to an idol manga after completing JJK 0 (see how to read Jujutsu Kaisen in order), but his editor suggested he continue with JJK, leading to the series’ creation. This might explain why fans anticipate a return to that original concept now that JJK has officially concluded.

In conclusion, Jujutsu Kaisen Part 2 is not on the agenda for now, despite fans’ ongoing desires for a sequel. Please share your thoughts in the comments below – should Gege continue the Jujutsu Kaisen saga? Would you like to see Sukuna’s origin story explored? Or perhaps an explanation of how the top three Jujutsu families emerged?
