As the formidable Vacuna emerges as the latest adversary for mutants, Cable and Bishop embark on a thrilling adventure through time in the highly anticipated Timeslide one-shot. This narrative promises to captivate fans as the X-Men strive to protect their history from a dire threat.
Having recently triumphed over the Children of the Vault in the celebrated miniseries Children of the Vault, Bishop and Cable have set aside past conflicts, making them the ideal duo to confront Vacuna. Their battle against this new menace unfolds in a gripping storyline that underscores their dynamic relationship and intent to safeguard mutantkind.
This year’s Timeslide serves as Marvel’s annual dive into the future, reminiscent of the Timeless series. In this narrative, Cable and Bishop navigate fragmented glimpses of potential outcomes shaped by Vacuna’s actions. In an insightful interview with Steve Foxe, details about this formidable new character were unveiled, emphasizing that Vacuna possesses the terrifying capability to “literally consume the very existence of mutants.”
“Vacuna, who got a SICK design from Ivan Fiorelli, can literally consume the very existence of mutants from the timestream. He’s a big, bombastic existential threat that’s also an excuse to throw together two of the X-Men’s coolest characters and force them to work together with the fate of everything on the line. And with the timestream fracturing, as Vacuna starts to achieve his goal, Bishop and Cable begin to get glimpses of potential futures to come for the Marvel Universe…”
The Children of the Vault’s Sinister Agenda
Creating a Villain That Devours History
The Children of the Vault represent a post-human breed, known as Homo novissima, who have honed their abilities over millennia within a temporally isolated city. With an agenda to eliminate both humanity and mutantkind, they rebranded themselves as the “Children of Tomorrow,”deceptively gaining favor through a manipulated virus that presented them as heroes. Although their ambitious plans were thwarted by the collaborative efforts of Bishop and Cable, the aftermath left the Children with an intensified vendetta, ultimately leading to the creation of the catastrophic Vacuna.
His design for Vacuna and how various powers work incorporate sick bits of cosmic/body horror into the mix, Cable and Bishop have real ‘90s heft to them, and you just get a thrill out of every timeline we revisit.
In this narrative, the time-shifting mutant Eva Bell, known as Tempus and previously part of The Five on Krakoa, returns to alert the X-Men about Vacuna’s encroaching threat. As the Children execute their plan to create Vacuna—a “chronal tunneler”with enhanced senses—the danger becomes palpable. Tempus warns that Vacuna has already begun to erase key moments in mutant history, putting the entire timestream at risk of irrevocable damage, which could spell the end for mutantkind.
Unlocking Marvel’s Future Through Conflict
The Past’s Influence on the Future
To protect their legacy, Bishop and Cable must embark on a time-bending quest alongside Eva Bell, unveiling significant secrets about upcoming Marvel tales. From Doctor Doom’s unexpected rise as the Sorcerer Supreme to the introduction of the New Champions, Vacuna’s offensive against time grants fans an exhilarating preview of what lies ahead in 2025 and beyond. However, a looming threat persists: should Bishop and Cable fail to contain Vacuna, the future of mutantkind hangs in the balance, which is a reality these X-Men will fight desperately to avoid.
In essence, Vacuna embodies a relentless “chronal predator”intent on erasing every semblance of mutant existence across time. As this formidable villain threatens the very fabric of the Marvel Universe, Cable and Bishop will muster every ounce of their training and ingenuity to combat this looming calamity. The fate of the mutant race—and perhaps the broader Marvel legacy—is at stake.
Timeslide #1 from Marvel Comics will be released on December 25th, 2024.
