For those in search of a captivating Halloween love story, *Your Monster* is the perfect choice. Featuring stars Melissa Barrera and Tommy Dewey, this film appeals to anyone who believed the Beast from *Beauty and the Beast* was more attractive than Prince Adam. Yes, I’m including myself in that group!
Laura (Barrera) is an actress grappling with heartbreak, a recent cancer diagnosis, and an uninvited monster lurking in her home who wants her to leave. Initially, Monster (Dewey) presents himself as a bitter recluse, but he gradually reveals his charming and romantic side. This adds a bittersweet touch for those who are single as they watch the unfolding tale.
Everything about this film is stunning. From the visual representation of Laura and Monster dancing akin to a classic love story to the emotional release Laura experiences during her performance, I adored every aspect of this creation by Caroline Lindy. It’s no surprise, given my penchant for romance and my fondness for intriguingly attractive beastly characters, right?
It seems like *Your Monster* was crafted with “unique” individuals in mind, particularly those who relish monster romances. I say “unique” because society tends to classify us differently, but with films like this, we finally have an avenue to showcase the allure of a love story that delves into the human-monster dynamic.
Jacob (Edmund Donovan) wrote a musical for Laura during their time together, but he chose to end their relationship, stating her cancer was “too overwhelming” for him. Heartbroken and without prospects, Laura embarks on a transformative journey with Monster, discovering her self-worth as both an actress and a woman in an unexpectedly uplifting way.
Don’t let an ordinary man hold you back; find your monster
While I’m not advocating for everyone to enter relationships with monsters, I do want to emphasize that Monster genuinely cares for Laura, which deserves appreciation. Dewey’s portrayal of the Monster is a remarkable blend of ultra-masculine protector and endearing romantic lead. Even as he showcases his strength, he never overshadows Laura’s individuality.
That’s what defines a true gentleman (and yes, I might be falling for Monster, which is perfectly fine). It’s clear that Lindy has created something exceptional with *Your Monster*. Pinpointing the elements that contribute to its success is challenging, but perhaps I’m particularly receptive due to my love for *Beauty and the Beast* or my lingering identity as a theatre enthusiast. Regardless of the causes, I find myself continuously reflecting on this cinematic gem.
I dream of inhabiting this enchanting world where Monster has always protected Laura. It’s as if the monster lurking beneath your bed was not only attractive but also kind, wanting nothing more than your happiness. We all crave that kind of affection, don’t we? *Your Monster* is currently in theaters, and I wholeheartedly recommend that you experience it for the emotional journey and leave humming one of Laura’s songs.
